David Yetman​David Yetman is a research social scientist and has been at the University of Arizona Southwest Center since 1992. He received his doctorate in philosophy from the U of A in 1972. Yetman’s research has been directed toward the indigenous people of Sonora and their history. He has written extensively on the native uses of desert plants and in 2002 co-authored Mayo Ethnobotany: Land, History, and Traditional Knowledge in Northwest Mexico. In his 2007 volume, The Great Cacti: Ethnobotany and Biogeography of Columnar Cacti, Yetman documents columnar cacti throughout the Americas. He recently co-authored a forthcoming book about the iconic Sonoran Desert cactus, the saguaro, expected to be published this year by University of Arizona Press. In addition to his writing, Yetman served for nine years as host for the PBS documentary television series The Desert Speaks and currently produces and hosts the PBS series In the Americas with David Yetman. Yetman received Emmy Awards in 2007 and 2014 for his documentary television work. The title of his talk says it all: Why I love deserts and why you should as well—especially the Sonoran Desert |

Mary Ellen BatesMary Ellen Bates is founder and principal of Bates Information Services Inc. After 15 years managing corporate information centers and specialized libraries, she started her business in 1991 with the intent of providing high-end research and analysis services to strategic decision-makers. She is a writer, teacher and speaker, presenting frequently about issues in the information industry. Bates earned a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
