WORKSHOPS

Creating a Seed Library for Your Institution - Grant Olson, SSE Public Programs Manager, presenter
Seed libraries are sprouting around the country to provide communities with access to home-grown and regionally-adapted food. Often organized by public libraries and local horticultural groups, seed libraries are a fantastic way to encourage gardening, seed saving, and knowledge sharing. Learn how to create a successful seed library program at your own institution - we'll discuss different seed library models, the legality of seed lending, and programming opportunities. $15

The American Kitchen Garden: Varietal Research Tools - Sara Straate, SSE Seed Historian, presenter
This workshop explores the diverse sources of information used by SSE's Seed Historian to document the provenance of the 20,000 accessions in SSE's preservation collection. These references range from historic seed catalogs to agricultural research station bulletins and from contemporary works by garden historians to personal letters received by SSE. Varietal history research can include plumbing the high-tech digital depths or deciphering the handwriting of a devoted family gardener on notebook paper to gather the information on heirloom and historic kitchen garden varieties. Join the discussion and share information about your collections and favorite references on the subject. $15
