Museums and Art in the Twin Cities

 

American Swedish Institute - 2600 Park Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55407, (13 miles/20 minutes from airport, 20 miles/27 minutes from conference hotel) The American Swedish Institute is a historic museum and cultural center designed to celebrate Swedish culture, migration and arts.  Housed in the magnificent Turnblad Mansion, displays include magnificent wood carvings, elaborate Swedish tile stove, and 33 ornate rooms.  The on-site Fika Cafe serves New Nordic Cuisine.

The Bakken Museum   3537 Zenith Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN 55416. (13miles/25 minutes from airport, 16 miles/26 minutes from conference hotel)  The Bakken is the place to learn everything about electricity and magnetism and its use in the past.   On display are bizarre electrical artifacts from the 1800s to today including medical instruments, electric hairbrushes, magnetic applicators, and radionics equipment.  Exhibits may include Frankenstein's Laboratory and Ben Franklin's Electrical Parlor Tricks.

Historic Fort Snelling  ( 1 mile east of the airport, at the junction of MN Highways 5 and 55, follow signs,)  Built in the early 1820s, Historic Fort Snelling is a great place to learn about military history from before the Civil War through World War II, fur trade history, slavery in Minnesota, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 and much more. Its location — at the junction of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers — has been significant for centuries to many American Indian communities.  History comes alive with people in period costumes and roles.

Mill City Museum  704 S. 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401  (15 miles/25minutes from airport, 22 miles/27 minutes from conference hotel) The Mill City Museum (the most explosive museum in the world) is built into the ruins of what was once the world's largest flour mill.  The museum  celebrates Minneapolis's history as the flour milling capital of the world from 1880 to 1930.  Be sure to go on the Flour Tower 8-story elevator ride and see the mill's history unfold as you go floor to floor.

Museum of Russian Art - 5500 Stevens Avenus S.,  Minneapolis, MN 55419  (9 miles/13 minutes from airport, 16 miles/20 minutes from conference hotel) The Premier Museum in North America for Russian Art. Based in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, The Museum of Russian Art is the only one of its kind in North America. Through our ever changing exhibits and fresh arts and performance events, we will introduce you to the Russia you don’t know. Stop by. Be surprised.

Paisley Park Museum - 7801 Audubon Road, Chanhassen, MN 55317  ( 23 miles/30 minutes from airport, 2 miles/5 minutes from conference hotel)  Hello Prince Fans!  Paisley Park is Prince’s extraordinary private estate and production complex in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Fans will have the unprecedented opportunity to experience first-hand what it was like for Prince to create, produce and perform inside this private sanctuary and remarkable production complex.  Throughout the experience, visitors will see artifacts from Prince’s personal archives, including iconic concert wardrobe, awards, musical instruments, artwork, rare music and video recordings and motorcycles.

More information for Prince fans.   On the side wall of the Chanhassen Cinema, New Zealand artist, Graham Hoete, has painted a wonderful mural of Prince.  The mural is visible from the south parking lot of the conference hotel.  Chanhassen Cinema is located adjacent to the conference hotel at 570 Market Street, Chanhassen, MN. 

New Zealand mural artist Graham Hoete started painting a mural of Prince on the side of the Chanhassen Cinema on Saturday, June 18. He's planning an official presentation of the mural to the public on Wednesday at 7 p.m. He wants Prince fans to come out and be part of a huge group photo, taken by a drone camera.

 

Science Museum of Minnesota  120 W. Kellogg Boulevard, St. Paul, MN 55102 ( 10 miles/19 minutes from airport, 32 miles/36 minutes from conference hotel) Exhibits focus on technology, natural history, physical science and mathmatics.  Also on-site is the Omni Theater....

Walker Art Museum and Sculpture Garden -  725 Vineland Place, Minneapolis, MN 55403  (14miles/22minutes from airport, 20 miles/25 minutes from conference hotel)  Modern Art.  The 11 acre sculpture garden is home to more than 40 works.

Weisman Art Museum  333 East River Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55455 (15miles/25 minutes from airport, 22 miles/26 minutes from conference hotel) The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum is an art museum located on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. A teaching museum for the university since 1934, the museum is named for Frederick R. Weisman, and was designed by Frank Gehry.Often called a "modern art museum," the 20,000+ image collection has large collections of Marsden HartleyAlfred MaurerCharles Biederman, Native American Mimbres pottery, and Korean furniture.
